Buckets, Boys and Basketball

While it was flooding in Calgary, and we are talking major disaster flooding, we got to go to Utah for Carson's basketball team.  It was 40 degrees Celsius in Utah and the only way to stay cool was to be in water outside.  It didn't take the boys long to figure out how to stay cool!

All that is required is a few buckets filled with hose water.

And if you want to prevent sunburn you just put the lids on!

 When the buckets got boring the boys rigged up their own water slides.

Meanwhile Carson was playing in a basketball tournament with his Genesis club team.  They only had 7 players there and they ended up playing 5 games in a 25 hour period.  It was a little crazy but they had fun.  Carson took a terrible fall in the last game where he was going up for a layup and 2 guys took his legs out from under him.  He fell backwards really hard with no hands or anything to help cushion the fall.  The sound of the bang of his head on the floor was just sickening.  I am usually pretty calm and collective when my kids get injured but I have to admit that I jumped out of my seat when his head landed on the floor and he didn't move right away.  He finally came to and the first thing out of his mouth was "Did I make the layup?"  Of course they called the foul but wouldn't let him take his foul shots because he had to be checked out for a concussion.  One of his teammates took the foul shots while the doctors checked Carson.  They wouldn't let him play the rest of that half of the game.

Genesis motto is DO WORK!  The emphasize doing work in family, school and on the court.  Carson loves to DO WORK with the Genesis team!

Cavalier Awards Night

A year ago this week Kailey made the decision to go to St. Joan of Arc school.  It was after she went to the Athletic banquet for Carson that she decided she wanted a piece of the Cavalier action.  She was disappointed when she found out that she had her semi-final club bball championship game on the same night as the awards banquet this year.  I told the coaches of our dilemma and so they postponed the awards as long as they could (eating dinner and having a guest speaker) so that Kailey could get there in time.  She left her basketball game after the third quarter and arrived at St. Joan just in time to accept the volleyball MVP . . .

Jacob and Kailey were the grade 8 MVP's for volleyball, badminton, and flag football.  

After a year of being a Cavalier Kailey is glad she made the decision to come to St. Joan of Arc school and they are happy to have such a great girl and athlete at their school!

CBA Basketball for Kailey

Kailey has been busy this spring playing club basketball for CBA.  She made the elite grade 8 club team.  This team is pretty good I must say.  Last weekend they beat Team Alberta (supposed to be the best team in Alberta as it takes players from all over the Province) by 15 points.  I guess the CBA team is the best in Alberta now!   Even though they are a U14 team (all players in grade 8) they play in a U15 league and the only team they haven't beat is their own CBA's U15 team.  They only lost to them by 1 point though and it was an exciting game.

Kailey is one of our best rebounders and is pretty aggressive on the court.  

 She does a pretty good job of boxing out her man!

 She also is a scoring threat from inside and out!

Her game is definitely improving as she has really had to prove herself on this team.  She has proven that she is good enough to be one of the starting 5 on one of Alberta's best teams in this age group!

Carson's High School Athletic Banquet 2013

I can't believe it is this time of year again all ready!  This means school is just about done for the year and another school year has flown by.  Carson only has two more years of High School left!  Where does the time go?

Carson wasn't sure which awards (if any) he may get this year.  

The competition is pretty stiff in High School Sports! 

He was pleasantly surprised when he was awarded MVP of volleyball.  Mr. Larsen, his coach, talked about him consistently being at all practices and always the hardest working player there.  He said that Carson was the most intentional person he had ever coached and that he would internalize every piece of feedback he was given and make it work on the court.  He is definitely the kind of player that every coach loves to have on their team.  He was literally involved in almost every single rally they played the entire volleyball season and was a huge contributor to their success as a team. Way to go Carson.  Some really nice things said about you from your coach!



Then on to basketball. . . .   With Darcy being the coach of the team he was the one to pick the MVP.  Going into the season he never wanted to play favouritism to his son and is actually harder on Carson than on any other player on the team.  Brody and Carson were neck and neck all season in their stats and by the end, the difference in the hustle factor that Darcy calculated every game was 1/100th of a decimal place off of each other.  He awarded 2 MVP's instead of an MVP and a coaches award.  Brody and Carson were thrilled to receive these awards together and all of their teammates would agree that they deserved it!

There are some good things to come from these boys in the next 

few years at Ernest Manning High School.  

Then the big award.  Athlete of the year!  There were 8 nominees up for this award.  Mr. Larsen had more really great things to say about this athlete.  "This person really is the epitome of what Athlete of the Year should be.  As an athlete he is one of the most gifted people that I have come across.  On each team that he was a part of he was the leader or one of the leaders.  Whether it was in practice or in games, whatever he was involved in, he was the hardest worker.    Despite his great ability and work ethic, he still realizes that to be where he is, he needs to continue to work hard and that there is always room for improvement.  He recognizes this and is always more than willing to work hard in order to grow and improve.  I had the pleasure of coaching this young man this year and I feel safe in saying that any coach would be more than happy to take him and make a whole bunch of clones to make a dream team. This year's winner of male athlete of the year goes to . . .  Carson Weston."

Carson was pretty excited but received this award very humbly and graciously.  

There were some other really good athletes that were nominated for this so it was a quite an honour for Carson to receive this award!

Who Knew She Could Throw a Discus Too?

 Kailey decided she would do track and field this year but with her knees bothering her she didn't want to run so she learned how to throw a discus.  Who knew she could throw it so well??

 It was a nice throw!  68 feet and 3 inches.  Not bad for a jr. high girl!

That's good enough to win a silver for St. Joan!  Congrats Kailey!
